The mountain landscape of Crete is a unique experience for the visitor. The nature - lovers who visit Paleohora, except the beautiful seaside, they also have the chance to enjoy, unforgettable routes and sites in the mainland!

Daily timetables and organised excursions from the local tourist offices, are offering you many alternative ideas and suggestions for your trips to gorges and walkpaths of the area.

Samaria gorge starts from Omalos plateau on the White mountains. The largest natural European gorge, with 18km length and 500m height. It is a protected National park and the route towards there is an oportunity to admire rare plants, herbs and wild flowers of Crete. Apart from the flora, in the Samaria park, protected fauna species still exist like the Cretan wild goats or 'Kri-Kri' and the menaced Royal Eagles. The four hours hikking into a live natural history museum, ends in Agia Roumeli beach. From this place, you can take the return boat to Paleohora.

The route in Agia Irini gorge is a sightseeing at the natural riches of our land 7.5 kilometres with deep green landscapes of pine and plane trees. Plants and herbs of Crete, bushes and wild plants. Exploring the gorge, you will discover, not one or two but 13 caves! Reaching the end of the trip, enjoy your swimm on Sougia beach untill the afternoon return timetable to Paleohora.

 
 
 
The small gorge of Anidri is a nice one-hour route from Paleohora. Apart from the nature touch, you have the chance to visit the colourful village and walk the path that guides you to the famous Gialiskari beach.
 

Another gorge of the wider area is the Topolia gorge, starting from Koutsomatado village in Kissamos region. The Tripiti gorge between Sougia and Ag.Roumeli, starts from the seaside and ends up to the church of Profitis Ilias with the fantastic view of the Lybian Sea.

Also in this area there are the gorges of Kalogirou, Kampanou, Prines, Azogires, Prasse and Koustogerako.

The European trail E4 is another unique oportunity for the hikers. Marked with signs,starts from Kissamos region,the route continues from Elafonisi to Paleohora and from here follows direction to East Crete: Sougia, Agia Roumeli
